In this tutorial I’m going to show you how I painted the pink cloud background of this unicorn painting using acrylic paints.
Pink clouds make the perfect background for paintings, whether its the background to an animal painting, or the sky in landscape art, and they can even make a lovely painting all on their own!
This is a super simple way to paint these pink clouds, perfect for beginners as well as experienced artists.
Let's paint some clouds!
To paint this pink cloud background you will need:
- Acrylic paints (white, pink, dark pink, yellow and purple)
- Medium rounded paintbrush
- Canvas
Step 1:
Let’s start by painting a pink/purple gradient, with pink at the top and purple at the bottom. If your acrylic paint is drying a bit too fast to blend, just add a little water to your paint brush. It can also help to lightly spray your canvas with water before you start painting.
Step 2:
Mix some white and pink paint together to get a light pink shade of paint and then paint a rough stripe for the top of the cloud. Quickly move the paintbrush up and down while painting to get the fluffy cloud line.
Step 3:
Use a medium pink shade of paint to fill in the cloud underneath the highlight. Then use a darker shade of pink to paint the shadow underneath the cloud. You can also add a little purple to the shadow of the cloud to darken it a little.
Step 4:
Add more clouds using the same technique. To add more colour to the background you can add a little light yellow paint to the highlights and more purple paint to the shadows. You can also add contrast by adding pure white paint to the very lightest highlights of the clouds.
