In this tutorial I’m going to show you how I painted this colorful fox using acrylic paints. This fox painting was really fun to create and I love how vibrant the orange fur looks against the dark blue background.
I have created a short video below showing you the process of how I painted this colorful fox, and if you want to watch the full length tutorial then sign up to my Patreon and you will get instant access to all of my full length art tutorials!
Time to Paint!
To paint this fox you will need:
- Acrylic paints
- Paintbrushes
- Sponge
- Water
- Pencil
Step 1:
To start sketch out the outline of your fox onto the canvas with a pencil. Then, use a sponge to paint the background section dark blue. I added some lighter blue paint towards the centre to create a glow around the fox.
Step 2:
Start painting the first layer of the fox using yellow and orange acrylic paints. Add yellow paint on the edges of the fox to create a highlight. Start painting the neck of the fox first.
Step 3:
Use dark blue and grey to paint a shadow underneath the fox’s chin. This is the white section of the fox’s neck, however a lot of it will be in shadow so use lots of blue and grey shades of paint.
Step 4:
Start painting the first layer of the fox’s face using yellow paint for the highlights and orange and pink paints in the other sections. If you want to see the whole process of me painting the fox then head to my Patreon so you can learn exactly how I created this painting.
Step 5:
Paint the ears of the fox using dark brown and purple acrylic paints. Then use a lighter shade of paint to draw the fine hairs in the ears. It helps to water the paint down slightly when painting the hairs.
Step 6:
Use a smaller paintbrush to paint the fox’s eyes and nose. Look at reference photos of fox eyes to try to add as much detail as possible. Then use white and light blue paint to paint the highlight.
Step 7:
Start on the second layer of the fox’s fur, this time adding in more fur lines by using a pointed paintbrush. Use the same colour acrylic paints as you did in the first layer, and just focus on adding the fur details.
Step 8:
To finish your fox painting continue to add fur lines until your fox looks really furry. Then increase the contrast by slightly darkening the shadows and brightening the highlights.
Finally, add some whiskers using a really fine paintbrush.
